No first hand experince, but I see no need to split the reservation. Upgrade the 4 pax and afterwards you try to upgrade the last pax in the PNR separately.

If all fails, upgrade the last pax with miles or cash at the airport. There is little risk that the flight will be sold out/upgrade not possible as flights to the US are very empty at the moment.
