It doesn't matter how many points you have, or if you have any points at all, at the time of booking. When you go to check out, you can redeem whatever points you happen to have at that time. They're sort of like cash, having the same value whether you apply them on booking or on check-out, and you can choose to spend whatever quantity of them you wish.
