I rarely have a problem with wifi on board, either on my laptop or iPhone. I almost always connect to get aa.com and AA app access. Sometimes also for the IFE and/or the free 20 minutes. I do not use a VPN. The RJs tend to be a bit more problematic. On them you don't get the free 20 minutes option and it often works only above 10,000 feet.
