Airlines are still getting it wrong (hardly surprising given the differing views of even the esteemed minds in here) so probably easiest to just renew. But compensation would be due if someone was denied boarding with a valid passport.
This is my understanding although to confuse things further, there is some suggestion that Sweden and Norway have different rules. I am following Simon Calder on this topic who has been vocal to put it mildly. But I'm confident that the two tests are separate, based on everything I have read on the matter. I would however also be in the "easier to just get a new passport" camp although that is academic for the OP at this point
