I've always been surprised that there isn't more demand (and as a result more supply) on this route, but ke sera sera I guess.
YYeah... SFO isn't that big but with the great SFO area and silicon valley obviously more traffic than predicted by size alone. Plus it's a major UA TPAC hub.
It all depends on how to define "busiest" a as usual in airlines there are many different metrics. According to the internets in 2024 SFO was the 5th busiest US city pair based on ASM. And airlines like to count things in ASMs. #1 & #2 ate YYZ-EWR & YYZ-LGA so that's almost one city. I was kind of surprised that nothing Florida popped into that list.
If one is calculating by seats, it paints a different picture. Example: YYZ-SFO (in July 2024) was 54.8M ASMs and 24k seats. YYC-YVR was 18.5 ASMs but 43k seats.
As usual one can use statistics like a drunk uses a lamp post. More for support than illumination. But semantics aside on how to count route popularity, YYZ-SFO likely still one of the higher business travel proportion flights still around an definitely an important route for RM on the NA scale.
