OK let's run with this and do some back of the envelope math... So let's add a row of J to a plane +4 seats on the flight you often indicate that J is always full. assuming they can sell them out at 90% =
- 3.6 seats per flight
- 7.2 seats per day
- Assume $1000 delta between Y and J, cause if the schedule fits and alternative times don't work most people will buy Y if J is full last minute rather than not buy at all
- $7,200 per day --> call it $2.7M per year or 0.012% increase in earnings. Basically, a rounding error.
- --> This does not include the costs associated adding the product and maintain an additional fleet variant.
I'm no airline expert but I'll bet you a Rum & Coke Zero from the lounge that AC could make a 6 minute call to points.com and offer them a deal on points for one of their bonus points promotions that will net AC a lot more dollar value in their magic currency than $2.7M oh…and that it controls the redemption value on those points too.
You would really like them to always have a J seat available on the flight you want, whenever you want it, and I get that. That point is repeatedly crystal clear. However, much like the people constantly clamoring for more TATL from YYC; assuming because you want it AC should provide it is somewhat nearsighted. This is one of AC's top 10 busiest NA routes, so I gather there are people looking at it more than once a quarter. Your argument is based on subjective data and AC has all the real data it needs to make that call and one could argue the data suggests they don’t need to it all.
