If there is award availability for the LHR-EDI sector can't you just call AA to add it to your existing award? I thought AA doesn't charge by sector so it may even be free in miles terms to do that?

Otherwise you can't combine them no. Alternatively look at cash fares where you could book the cheapest Plus fare for that day and move that for free on the day if needed.
