After all that I may ditch it and go with UA. Much more humane connections 1-2.5hrs. Only one connection in EWR. Was fretting about EWR but hoping by July will be sorted out.

Update. Went with #1. Reading about all the delays and chaos at EWR made me think I may be there longer than my connections anyway.
