It sounds as if you missed the check-in deadline. I've booked AC tickets for use on partners many times. I did this recently for a flight on Gulf Air. AC sent me a receipt with my AC booking reference (PNR) and that was it. I was able to check in on-line, but at no time before check-in did I receive anything from either carrier, and then it was a check-in confirmation from Gulf Air (noting a different Gulf Air PNR). mer unfriendly, but that's the way it is. My personal rule is to be super careful of check-in cutoff deadlines if I've not been able to check-in prior to arrival at the airport. There may be a line at the counter, traffic, etc.
Also, it's always good to check the file, both on aircanada.com and on the web site of the airline operating the flight. Especially if no e-mail was received. And/or of course the cowtool can help too.
Incidentally, I never had a problem looking at a reservation made on AC on the Swiss web site. Or for that matter on other LH-owned airlines.
