We’ve rented a taxi for a day in the past and last visit just used Uber and taxis to get around. Really wasn’t that expensive and allowed us to see all the sites we wanted. Just mapped out the locations we wanted to visit and tried to make the best connections between them.
I also opted out of congesting the buses and rented a bike. Went everywhere on it since the weather was perfect and bike theft is not a major concern in Japan.
