Even putting aside how that tray is presented (An OCD nightmare!) that just sum’s up I think BA’s biggest issue. They claim to want to compete with the LCC’s on SH economy in that market, and they probably do reasonably well. However they also claim to want to also offer a premium experience at the other end of the market. I get why there are limitations on what can be served on a night stopper (well, actually there aren’t as they could uplift a high quality breakfast from an outstation caterer, but let’s put that to one side) so they choose to provide a cereal bar. Fine, to a point. Yet the bar they choose is the cheapest, mass market, p!ss poor cereal bar imaginable. Because it is such a mass market option all their customers also instantly know it. Everyone knows a nultigrain bar can be picked up at Tesco for about £2 for a multipack. So any illusion or sense of receiving a premium experience is zapped instantly.

There are a world of simple, inexpensive options that could be provided that would still get around the limitations of a night stopper that would at least maintain a pretence of quality and of a premium experience.

Yet BA decide “that’ll do” and chuck a Kellog’s bar on the tray like a stressed parent who’s forgotten their kid needs a packed lunch tomorrow at 11pm at night and they’ve raided the back of the cupboard to see what’s left that they could chuck in the lunchbox to keep little one filled up.

If you’re going to try to persuade people the extra money for the upgrade is worth it, then the *experience* and people’s *perception* of it is 99% of the task. Chucking an item that everyone knows is cheap as chips on there kills the illusion.
