I can't answer your question, but if most of your trip is going to be in NJ and west of there, have you considered flying into PHL?

If you do end up flying into JFK and won't be traveling with a lot of luggage, you might also consider taking public transportation into Manhattan, and renting there at one of the rental locations still open at the time of day when you expect to arrive.
