A set of flights that pretty much work is VY from CAG to BCN (09:15 to 10:50) connecting to AA BCN-MIA departing at 13:10. So my question is, is there any way to buy a ticket that protects this connection? Google flights does not seem to be able to see it.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Just to be complete, I need to go from TYS to CAG, getting there on 9/14, and return from CAG to TYS, leaving CAG on 9/20. So if I am missing some good solution other than the VY-AA connection, I would love to hear it. Of course, Skyteam and Star both offer convenient and inexpensive connections to do this trip...
There is some kind of fare class / booking code issue going on. AA.com will happily sell you the CAG-BCN-MIA-TYS routing (or BCN-PHL/DFW-TYS, both of which are 2+ hrs. quicker than going through MIA), but it's only showing available in business class, even though the CAG-BCN segment is booking into R/economy on the Vueling leg.

You could try putting the flights on hold in business, then just call AA and see if an agent can get it to price accordingly in economy.

As you said getting to CAG is very difficult using oneworld or AA partners; I've been the past 3 years and will actually be there the same week as you in September. Last year I did the LHR/LGW shuffle to BA getting there, then just booked a separate ticket on ITA to Rome on the way out. The other times I've flown AA/BA into LHR/FRA/ZRH/VIE and booked separate tix from there on LH/LX/OS to and from CAG. It's certainly worth it once you get there though.
