You, of course, would be responsible for getting yourself and your luggage from LGW to LHR (just as if you were doing a JFK-LGA connection). But it appears that BA's flight schedule from CAG to LGW would require an overnight in LON -- or perhaps somewhere in the U.S. -- so not ideal, especially if you're looking for something economical.

Yes, I believe connecting in London requires an extra overnight both directions. It is also more expensive in coach than business on Star... according to google flights. Of course, I would love to hear about some option that I have overlooked.
This trip is mandatory, so I am considering doing a status match to United just for this one trip.
