The original Palladium did not have a chip or contact-less features - both were introduced way after these features became available on other cards. It's good they finally added these features as I would probably not carry or use it much having been the victim of swipe fraud at an overseas restaurant. It was a PITA to update all of my airline, hotel and other booking sites with the new card (and still a PITA when I have to update the expiration dates).
To be sure, the original Palladium card displayed your personal signature engraved into the card. I miss that.
Yes I think we were heading to Europe and I wanted to be able to use the card so at least wanted chip and signature. That was definitely it.
I do miss the signature thing. I think I still have mine around somewhere as a souvenir. I wish I had a better idea of how it would look though. I usually sign really tiny so it looks so smooshed on the card.
