The egates will read your passport number, check you have an eta associated with that passport number and if everyrhing is good will let you through.

If not you will get a 'seek assistance' just as you do today if they cannot confirm everything.

People who have more than one passport (eg eu and us) may need to be more careful which they use to enter the uk if they only have the eta on one
