AC Hotel Palacio Universal, Vigo, Spain [Master Thread]

I spent a night at the AC Hotel "Palacio Universal" in Vigo, Galicia. I had crossed from Valença, Portugal to Tui, Spain and then came up from Tui. Galicia is beautiful and feels like a step back in time, in a good way.

Vigo, nevertheless, is a large bustling city with an active waterfront area. The AC Hotel is very centrally located.

Pros:
  • Upgraded in advance to a Sea View king (I don't think any suites were available, if any exist). Room was small but looked nice enough with three little balconies.
  • Welcome amenity was a small jar of little malted chocolate candies that are a cross between hazelnut Baci and Whoppers.
  • Complimentary coffee and pastries were out in the lobby in the afternoon. The lobby coffee was the good Nespresso (the flat disc capsules that are ristretto, lungo, etc.).

Cons:
  • Air conditioning has to be set by the front desk centrally! I set it to 18°C in the room and nothing happened, so I sent a message and they activated it. The air came on and it felt like it got down to 22°C. I was able to fall asleep around midnight--only to wake up sweltering at 1:45am. The problem was the lack of airflow, it was stifling. But there was so much noise outside (until 5am) that opening the windows was not an option. I sent another message asking for as much air as possible but it was barely noticeable. At 3:30am, I ordered a bottle of red wine from room service. The guy could tell I was not pleased. Ultimately I wasn't charged for the wine, which was nice, and by 5am the room was cool enough that I was able to sleep until 10 -- but I then had to reconfigure my day. If you need air flow to sleep well, do not stay here!
  • No free breakfast, had to apply the $10 credit to the 13.20 Euro breakfast fee (which is a cheaper rate that you pay if you add it at check in). Breakfast was abysmal. The only hot items were some very sad "scrambled eggs," Euro-bacon, and tomatoes. No eggs to order.

So, I will not return. But I would gladly return to Vigo and stay someplace nice (the Gran Hotel Nagari looks great).

One highlight--in the next building over from the AC is Maruja Limón, an entry-level Michelin-starred joint serving up an outstanding tasting menu for a very reasonable 88 euro. Highly recommend a seat at the counter.
