So I had an experience connecting through MUC. Itinerary was LIS-MUC-SFO.
The scheduled connection was like 1:20 to 1:30.
LIS-MUC flight departed a little late but landed around scheduled time. Long trek from I believe a K gate to an H gate. Passport control had a long queue, took a good 15-25 minutes. I guess I should have tried the auto gates but I didn't want to risk having it reject my passport and I go to the end of the queue for the regular passport line.
Skipped the lounge, UA195 had started boarding already.
Well they did the passport and boarding pass check just as I neared the departure gate and oh lucky me, they decided to have me go through the extra baggage check at the gate. So they seem to pick some subset of passengers.
I guess MUC has a few extra scanners so they decide to put them at the gates. But these must be older scanners. They wanted me to take out everything amenity kit liquids, shoes, belts, iPad, laptops, large cameras, my drone kit which was inside my carry on.
In contrast, at LIS, I got Fast Track and kept most of the things inside the suitcase and my backpack. I'm sure MUS has similar advanced scanners which allow a more streamlined security scanning process as well.
Even with most of my carry on emptied, they wanted to check for some of my packing cubes, which had cables, chargers and a number of non-electronic things. That is they examined after the carry on came out of the scanner but they decided they didn't need to run them through the scanner again.
So I boarded okay, settled into my seat, probably another 15-20 minutes later boarding completed.
So if you have only 60-90 minutes to connect for a TATL flight out of MUC, you probably won't be able to go to lounge. You have to be prepared for the extra scanning check, which requires unpacking almost everything.
Several years ago, I went through the same thing leaving MUC. I remember they took one of my zoom lenses out of its case and carry on and they took the caps off both ends, tries to look through to make sure there wasn't anything in there except optics. Wasn't too happy then and it took a bit of time to recap the lens and pack it and everything back up.
I'm not as big a critic of "security theater" as some people but MUC seems to want to keep some of their employee busy. Pretty sure I've never seen this at FRA or for that matter, any other Western European hubs for TATL departures.
