It did not use to be like this in the olden days. Back in the day, these situations were managed (IME) more professionally, without visible displays of irritation with passengers. Furthermore, crew were recruited with language skills. Though i suspect things are only done in English, apart from some longhauls, because that is the standard that BA lays down nowadays.
PS And I suspect some things needed to be managed with a hairbrush as well!
