I did that and two out of three sectors flown on that trip (SIN-ZRH and ZRH-XXX, both on Swiss metal) credited immediately, but the SQ sector came back as ineligible. They were all flown in the same fare class (J), so were all eligible.
I called customer service again and they said that I should write again to request credit. I did that recently and after several emails the agent responding to me insists that the only way to get retrospective credit is to change the name on my M+B account.
I don't mind doing that but also want my other currently booked flights to credit.
My main concern now is about which member year the retrospective flights will credit to. I believe it should be to the date flown, as you say, but that isn't what the agent told me.
Any further advice or experience appreciated.

No, whoever told you that is wrong. It will credit on the date the flight was flown. Call and ask again. Some agents are either not as knowledgeable as they should be or maybe the message gets skewed in translation. The only problem I can see is that it might not hit the account until after your status has expired (you say it is close but not how close). In that case you SHOULD get downgraded and then automatically re-upgraded when that flight hits but you might have to jump through some hoops calling them.
