iMessages will work on your phone provided your phone can message (SMS) their system from your phone number. It will persist for at least 30 days after the last SMS, I believe, even if you swap SIMs (it prompts on this, and a few days before expiry, IIRC).

I confirmed the data package is a one-time inclusion only when you pay annual for the plan - otherwise no roaming service is included with the starter plan.
