Is that a typo ,or have I misread, or is it really the sum of the small item + the carry-on suitcase cannot exceed 10 kilos? 10 kilos would basically mean that the carry-on is (almost) empty. The empty weight of the two pieces, plus the usual laptop, phone, tablet, a few cables, ID papers - that is 10 kilos. I can’t imagine that there is a 10 kilo weight limit for the total, that would make it pointless to have that carry on.

Can someone explain to me how this works in reality?

Thanks.
Isn't this fairly common? For AFKL (in anything but J/F), the sum of all pieces mustn't exceed 12kg (accessory + main cabin item).

So pretty sure it's 10kg for the two of them combined. 10kg also isn't an abnormal weight for a LCC, e.g. Norwegian also has a combined limit of 10kg for "lowfare+".

Now whether or not anyone will bother to check the weight of carry-ons... I've never in my life been asked to weigh carry-on luggage at the gate, although there are reports here and there of some airlines/airports doing it.
