Thanks for this. I’ll just add my dp in case it helps others.
I held LAX-HKG rt tickets but wanted to visit CAN.
Arrived in HKG at 6am. Had a seat assignment but couldn’t issue boarding pass online so had to see CX check in staff. It was quick and was able to grab breakfast and a shower in the lounge before catching the 7:40am flight to CAN. Flew HKG-CAN and showed a refundable SZX-HND ticket for 10 days in the future and received TWOV without any questioning upon arrival to CAN. On day 9 I took the HSR from south station to ZH and crossed into Macau at the HZMB port. Then I crossed into HK and took the bus back to HKG to take my flight home.
Definitely will reapply for a new Chinese visa now that I’m back, but it wasn’t really inconvenient to detour via Macau. The journey took roughly the same 2hr (45m train + 45 min bus + immigration) as had I gone straight to HKG via SZ and roughly the same cost (70rmb hsr + 58rmb cross-boundary coach).
