As always with schedule changes just HUCA. The "rules" are a grey area at best and many agents only offer the bare minimum while others will be happy to move you to just about anything.
And for something like this it's will be easier if you ask specifically for the AA flight number on the DOH-IAD flight. Not sure what flight numbers you booked originally but keep it in mind for mileage earning purposes.

I see. I tried via Twitter, and asked for flight AA8119 (DOH-IAD).
They responded that "we have got that flight in our sight, however,it appears that as this option is operated by our friends over at Qatar, we wont be able to use this option when rebooking to another airport."
Upon pressing, they explained that "we havedoubled back to take another look, and as Qatar is not a joint business partner, using this airline for rebooking to an alternate airport won't be possible. It will need to be an American Airlines code share with a join business partner."
