Reaching Elite status is already incredibly hard. Even if you fly over 100 domestic flights a year, it doesn’t necessarily get you there, especially if you’re not flying long-haul or business class regularly. It feels like unless you’re constantly travelling internationally or based out of Auckland, you’re at a disadvantage. Most of the Elite benefits are centred around AKL, so if that’s not your hub, you miss out on a lot.
What’s the point of adding a new tier when the current one already requires so much effort and spend to maintain? Instead of making the existing tiers more rewarding, they’ve just raised the bar even higher. It’s starting to feel like no matter how loyal you are, it’s never enough.
And on top of that, partner airline earn rates are still poor. For a Star Alliance member airline, Air NZ doesn’t offer much recognition or reward when you fly with partners. It’s especially disappointing when you compare it with other frequent flyer programs that give better treatment and more value across the board.
If you’re a frequent flyer who’s been loyal to Air NZ for years, this move feels like a slap in the face. Instead of improving the program, they’re making it more exclusive and out of reach for most travellers.
