I wonder, -- how did the hotel determine that the guard was lying if the only witnesses were the three people involved? No security cameras in the bathroom (I hope), and no uninvolved witnesses mentioned.

Also, on what basis is the hotel responsible for the actions of a rogue employee who committed an assault (crime) which is clearly prohibited by the hotel (employer) and clearly beyond the scope of employment?
I dont think the hotel is responsible for the actions of the employee (and I dont think the guests are claiming as such, they just wanted an apology/explanation AFAIK), it seems more like the Liberty is making the donation as a gesture of goodwill/as an apology.

It's possible the hotel was able to interview other guests, or its possible the guard admitted to lying after some probing (or was caught in a lie). Hard to say. All we know is what the hotel's investigation concluded.
