Don't forget going with Qatar, you are less protected than with BA or any other EU airline. I'm not saying Qatar will not going to help you out, but by law with BA and EU airlines you are significantly more protected in case of delays and cancellations. I'm fully aware also that a great travel insurance can handle a lot of cancellation problems too.
Thanks, living in the US don't unfortunately have the advantage of EU 261 except on flights from the EU or an EU airline. So far, fingers crossed, haven't had any major problem with QR or EK but I usually make sure there is a later flight in case of misconnect or a buffer in JNB. And with QR I still get my miles/points or whatever they're called now.
