Yes the A330/A340 program was a complete failure (can't mention one without the other since it was the same program but you know that). Believe the 330 is the most operated widebody in the world.
ETOPS180 (which Airbus should have seen coming to be fair) killed the 340 (pilot commonality must have been another Airbus weakness for this type) as it did all quads.
The A340 was a product of its time, despite having an extra engine, it effectively destroyed the MD-11. Then the 777-200ER came and the rest is history.
Did Mulroney have anything to do with Air Canada's A340 order? or was it just the A320?
The A340 fleet had served their time at Air Canada, I don't think they had many options back in the early 1990s, and the A340-500 will always have a special place in my heart.
