How is the exec. lounge?
The Club Lounge was once a wonderful space, combining elegant interior design with a high-quality offering.
Sadly, that is no longer the case, seemingly due to cost-cutting measures.
The most striking and regrettable change is the division of the Lounge into two areas.
Upon entering, the left-hand side now serves as a restaurant, leaving only the right-hand side as the Club Lounge.
This has stripped away the sense of exclusivity and tranquillity that once defined the space.
Even worse, comfort has been completely sacrificed.
The sofas have been removed and replaced by uncomfortable high chairs, leaving nowhere suitable to sit back and relax.
The layout is poorly thought out — the far right-hand side, which houses a coffee machine and drinks fridge, is dark and difficult to find.
Furthermore, a large and pointless table takes up valuable space.
The food and beverage offering is equally very disappointing:
- In the morning, breakfast is only available à la carte. While the quality is reasonable, the menu is extremely limited and there is none of the joy or variety of a proper buffet, which one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
- In the evening, the experience is even more underwhelming. The selection is extremely restricted, with mediocre, uninspiring food and a few alcoholic drinks.
- Throughout the day, guests cannot even expect an afternoon tea service — something that is entirely absent.
In summary, the Club Lounge has lost everything that once made it special: comfort, exclusivity, quality, and generosity.
A truly immense disappointment, even is service is good (very impressed notably by the lady who was in charge).
What was good and what was bad?
GOOD
- Elegant and historic atmosphere
- The view from the room
BAD
- The club lounge is a real disappointment.

The InterContinental Mark Hopkins offers an opportunity for those wishing to experience the historical grandeur of San Francisco.
The hotel’s architecture and, above all, its breathtaking views make for a memorable stay.
Perched atop Nob Hill, the location is superb.
Not only does it offer spectacular vistas, but it also provides easy access to many parts of the city — whether on foot, via Uber, or by taking the iconic Cable Cars.
Notable nearby destinations include Union Square for shopping, Chinatown for its vibrant culture, and Fisherman’s Wharf for its famous seafood and waterfront attractions.
Despite its remarkable potential, the property sadly appears somewhat neglected, seemingly due to a lack of investment.
The décor has remained virtually unchanged for the past 20 years, and while room maintenance is commendable, the guestrooms themselves would certainly benefit from refurbishment to meet modern expectations.
The very same applies to the Top of the Mark restaurant.
While its panoramic views remain its greatest asset, the design feels tired and outdated, failing to live up to the splendour of the location.
It is clear that this hotel could be exceptional, but at present, it falls short of its potential due to its ageing interiors and absence of significant upgrades.
That said, it remains a comfortable and pleasant option, especially if you are fortunate enough to secure a room with panoramic views.
Service is acceptable, though not remarkable — with the notable exception of a truly outstanding lady who sometimes manages the Club Lounge.
Her warmth and professionalism stand out and deserve recognition.
In conclusion, while the InterContinental Mark Hopkins still offers a taste of San Francisco’s historic charm, it feels far removed from the world’s leading hotels.
An investment and vision could transform it back into the icon it once was.
