In the times when I forget to bring the router, all it took was a call to the hotel's provider to get my ATV whitelisted. They mainly need the IP and MAC address, after which I restart the ATV, and I'm good to go.
I tried that when I first encountered this and the offshore rep was adamant that travel routers are security threats and "damaging to the network" and refused to authorize it unless I had the General Manager specifically approve it. Fortunately the front desk agent was more than happy to be the manager to pacify the offshore rep.
What worried me most about this is that they had NO isolation between clients on their network. Everyone could see everything. If I wasn't so dead tired, I probably would have fired up Wireshark and had a field day.
