Damaged Carryon Luggage; Your opinions please.

Hello, I don't usually post but do like to read the postings and for the most part appreciate the advice that is posted. I am seeking help for a good friend who recently had a traumatic experience on SW from OAK to TUS. I'll keep this a brief as possible but would appreciate your opinions on what to do.
My friend was one of two persons traveling from OAK to TUS. He had one carryon, a soft sided bag that could easily be stored under his seat. His traveling companion was in front of him while boarding the aircraft. When he entered the aircraft the F/A advised him that the overhead space was full and he would need to check his carryon( his traveling companion was not told to do this, he had two carryon pieces). My friend was uncomfortable with this since his bag was soft sided. The F/A advised him that if he did not check it he could not board the aircraft. Not wanting to miss his flight he surrendered his bag. The F/A stated he did not have any luggage tags but would ensure the bag made the flight. Upon arrival in TUS, my friend was shocked to see his bag arrive off of the carousel torn on the side, the zipper was seperated, the bag was damaged beyond repair. At this point he remembered that he had a camera, watch, and prescription sunglasses inside the bag. All were damaged. He filed a claim with baggage service but has not heard anything from SW. Since this is not your typical damaged bag scenario what do you think he is entitled to for compensation?
