As others have mentioned, you're not eligible for a refund of the fare difference in this situation. While that might seem unfair, it's standard practice across the industry -- as long as they got you to your destination (or, close enough that you accepted the re-route, in this case), no refund is due even if the flight that you were routed onto would have been less expensive. It seems a little punitive when the new flight is less expensive, but it's a life-saver when the new flight is
more expensive, so it normally balances out in the end.

This. If the 13K rate was available at the time that the change was made, a refund and then a new ticket purchase would have been a better idea.

might result in some miles being provided as a goodwill gesture, but there's no guarantee, as the EWR mess is mostly beyond UA's control.
