It wasn't a straight 50%, the amount I disputed was taken from the fare breakdown from the original ticket. The outbound flight was actually slightly more due to UK Airport taxes.
This is the breakdown I put in my dispute with the amounts blanked out:
Refund UK Air Passenger Duty - ’GB' charge shown on Fare Calculation in ticket
Refund UK Passenger Service Charge - 'UB' charge shown on Fare Calculation in ticket
Refund BHX-KIX Fare - XXXX.XX as shown in fare calculation in ticket multiplied by ROE (rate of exchange) of X.XXXXXX
Refund Proportional Share of YQ charge (believed to be Fuel Surcharge) - 'YQ' charge shown on Fare Calculation (XXXX.XX) multiplied by X.XXXXXXXXXXXX (XXXX.XX/XXXX.XX)
In the absence of them giving me a figure when asked, I made a good faith calculation based on the original ticket.
The re-issued ticket actually contained the identical fare calculation except the outbound flights were absent (they were in the fare calculation but not on the ticket).
