Here in the states, some newspapers and television stations have a "consumer advocate" reporter who investigates situations like this. Is something like that available to you in the U.K.?
At the time a Chargeback (or in the UK a Section 75 claim, which makes the credit card issuer liable for the product or service not delivered) seemed the quickest and most painless solution as the bank will immediately refund your credit card to stop you accruing interest and deal with recovering their loss later. I did consider UK261 but I thought the compensation would be small in comparison to the price of the ticket and it would take ages for anything to happen.

We have similar "consumer advocates" in the UK, there is Martin Lewis and a programme called 'Rip off Britain' on the BBC who I guess I could float this story to
