Worked on LGB-SMF yesterday, but you had to be persistent. At the gate there was no internet connection. Once airborne, the "free internet" button yielded the same old A+ benefit sign-in screen. I then toggled the WiFi off and back on and that log-in finally produced the free-for-all login screen. Logging in required an email address, name, and (if I remember correctly) flight number or origin and destination. Finally, I was rewarded with blazing ~2Mbps down/ 1Mbps up service.
