I'm flying on Iberia J LAX to Madrid and have a 5-6 hour layover. Flying out with Iberia domestic but separate tickets. Might try to ask nicely in my rusty high school spanish.
I'm going to spend 2-3 days in Madrid before my return flight home... you guys think it's worth it to take the train ride out to Madrid for 2-3 hours during my layover? I don't know how long it will take for non-EU to clear customs/immigration and bags at T4S and then check in again at T4. Long haul will be in J so hopefully I'm rested and I could stash bags at lockers.

I actually think you'd get into the IB lounge - just practise your Castilian Lisp
Re: worth going into Madrid
LAX arrives 1350? Assuming you can recheck your bags by 15H30 and need to get back to airport by 18H, we're looking at 16H to 1730H in town, which is great apertif hour (assuming May-June and not July-August).
Not sure it's worth the cost and hassle as you'll be back in Madrid for a proper visit and I think you'd get into IB lounge - the booze is good (beers, cavas, wines, vermouths, sherries)t and the afternoon tapas is OK. Shower and nap rooms also available.
Enjoy your trip...
