Thanks so much for this thread. I booked a last second solo trip to Japan next week, and am trying out two Ryokan - Satoyama Jujo and Ryugon. Seems like these are in one of the snowiest areas of Japan, which is maybe why there was such last second availability, but I am very excited.
I still want to write up something about my trip, but I ended up having such a great experience at both, despite the weather being even more than advertised!

I am coming back in June, this time with my entire family of four, and while we are staying in mostly western hotels, I just booked Hakone Suishoen for a night, which is exciting. Thank you again for the incredible thread, I owe it quite a lot in getting me out to those two amazing Ryokan in February!
