Last time i traveled and did a change connection via Hongkong or Singapore there was security guards at the tunnel area of the gate door with a large rubish bin taking peoples water bottle and whatever drinks you have in your bag. It was an extra layer of security just as you walk thru the tunnel to get to the plane soot to be able to board it in the plane. I was shocked about that.
This is common in Asian airports especially for flights to Australia - either full security at the gate lounge (e.g. KUL and SIN) or just a minor visual check of carry ons (e.g. a “security” person shoving their hand into your bag to feel for plastic bottles).
