You should be able to fly on any fare Frontier offers. As a diamond member, I mostly bought their discount den fares and got all the status perks. I am almost 100% certain that there are no fare restrictions for gold benefits. Like many things Frontier does, they make it confusing, though, so just be careful in the booking process that you don't pay anything extra.
I had given up on discount den for quite awhile because the savings for my chosen flights were mediocre, but I bought in again based on speculation. Had a flight for 4 people saving $80. It seemed silly not to put the $80 toward the discount.
Of course, next flight I would only have saved $2 per ticket with the DD fare and baggage would be $29 while the biz fare was just $2 more.
Sometimes the offers maths just don't work in your favour
