Pricing of upgrades seems very off recently, at least in cash they often seem to exceed the fare difference from the originally booked ticket. (sometimes even to the point where you can get a cheaper 'upgrade' by modifying your ticket after OLCI has opened)
For your example though, it doesn't appear to be 100% the same as your original ticket originates in Billund while your new ticket originates in Amsterdam so fare could be very different.

No , the upgrade fare is only to upgrade from AMS to AUS, excluding the BLL-AMS leg. The award fare is also only AMS-AUS so a like for like comparison.
I already paid a reasonably expensive Y flex ticket so in my book it should not be that an upgrade on an already paid ticket is more expensive in miles than a new award ticket.
