Friday was a “walking” tour of Kanazawa though we started by taking a bus from the station to Kenrokuen Garden. Kanazawa buses are quite complicated. In addition to finding the right bus for our destination we had to find a bus which accepted regional IC cards, credit cards as well as cash. Some buses only accepted local IC cards and cash. When boarding a bus which accepts IC cards and credit cards you have to tap the card on the panel on the right or left depending on the type of cards. Or take a piece of paper with a number if you are going to pay cash so the driver knows where you got on the bus.

Kenrokuen Garden dates back to the Edo period and is considered one of the three great gardens of Japan. Unfortunately we were about a week too late for cherry blossoms but some people discovered ice cream with gold leaf (I’ve seen ice cream with gold flakes but not gold leaf!) Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan’s gold leaf.

After Kenrokuen Garden we walked through the castle park towards Omicho Market.
