Sorry to hear that you experienced sinus pains. Hope someone can offer advice on how to deal with it. You might have had a steeper than usual descent into LAX (a friend of mine reported this too flying ORD-LAX a few days earlier) which might cause some sinus discomfort.
Also, 36,000 feet isn't really that abnormally high. Commercial airlines often fly up to 41,000 feet.
