I couldn't find much rhyme or reason to last minute award availability in January and again in April. There were flights with 10+ empty J seats that never popped up as a last minute redemption. Then there were others that had 3 or fewer J seats available that did show up. It worked out fine for me in the end, and frankly the randomness helps folks like me who put in the search time, but I couldn't make sense of it.
