AA Refund Policy & Procedure-NOT GOOD!

In January I purchased 2 round trip Refundable (to original form of payment) Business Class tickets to Europe. I recently found a much better fare on Delta--and quickly booked it.
Now--to cancel our AA tickets I went online to AA and proceeded to cancel, and noticed a statement: "Will be refunded as travel credit". Knowing that this is NOT correct. I called AA Reservations. (SO NOT a fun time!!) I confirmed with the agent that the tickets were indeed fully refundable, and that I needed to cancel first, receive travel credits and THEN request a refund. I am NOT comfortable with this, as I have no proof, other than the phone agents statements, that these are fully refundable. Nowhere on my ticket info on-line OR my confirmation emails does it state they are refundable. The agent said she could not send me confirmation of the refundable status.
Any suggestions? I certainly DO NOT want over $9K of travel credit with AA! And I'm uneasy with cancelling and requesting a refund without WRITTEN proof that they are fully refundable.
