It's possible the group rate was discounted and the contracted terms made that particular group booking ineligible for points and benefits. You should check with your organization if that's what they agreed to when they signed the contract. They may have done so to shave some more off the rate. These things are absolutely negotiable.
It's not very common, but we definitely see this pop up here on FT from time to time-- where group rates were negotiated to not give any points or elite benefits. Especially for a property outside of N America where Golds/Diamonds typically receive full breakfast, this is a way for properties to try and get up to $50+ a night in breakfast F&B revenue (especially if it's a conference or meeting and attendees are expensing F&B).
