That is not the only problem with the suggested itinerary. Assuming that these are separate tickets, if the BA flight LHR-PVG is four hours delayed or more, there's no way that he can even make his PVG-HKG flight, and that may cause denied boarding in LHR.
Booking an open-jaw LHR-HKG, PVG-LHR.would be far less risky.
