AA's IT can be wonky, I have seen the "multiple flights" thing several times for one-way itineraries that are just more complex. It does not necessarily mean than you can just remove the other flight or only tag your bags to an intermediate stop, etc.
What is your plan B if you get to the airport and the agent insists on tagging the bag all the way to KOA?
