Yes, that's my guess - as Mr. was showing up at the front desk the night shift seemed surprised. The next morning I dragged Mr to show himself to the front desk again to make sure that we didn't try to cheat.
There was nothing else I could do in that situation. I was telling the front desk that I'd give Marriott a call and I guess that did the trick.
