I recently stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki beach, I was surprised that about 70% of the guests were Japanese. We didn't use points, but got upgraded to a fantastic room in the centre of the hotel overlooking the swimming pool and the ocean. They have a top notch restaurant on the top floor, access is via a glass lift on the outside of the building, it is pretty expensive but the views are almost 360 degrees and magnificent.
The hotel is in the centre of everything, so walking or hopping on a trolley bus is no problem. We rented a car (rent it last minute at the local office, it is much cheeper) and went to the windsurfing North of the Island, that was a totally different experience and more rural, there are some great views when you are driving up there. Of course you have Pearl harbour and the Pelekane Bay, National Park with amazing reefs. I had affiliated membership of the Waikiki yacht club, if you get the chance go there, they are a friendly bunch and have some lovely boats there.
Send me a PM with an email address and I will send you some pics if you are interested
