Appreciate the insights for those of us who are Frontier virgins.
In the end I guess it is worth $40 to buy status. If it works everybody is happy. If it doesn't then we simply pay the oversize personal item penalty (or gate check the larger carry-on) and lesson learned.
To be fair I paid for LATAM black status and never used it once, and that was a much more expensive gamble...
